Varieties of Hook and Loop Fasteners

Since its introduction over 70 years ago, by Swiss engineer George de Mestral, the iconic hook and loop touch fastener has not changed much but there have been advancements and improvements made since the original product was developed.

Varieties of Hook and Loop Fasteners

When discussing hook and loop fasteners, there are two varieties to consider:

1. Sew-On - relies on a sewist to adhere the hook and loop onto a piece of sewable material using the selvage of the product. Typically found in bags, luggage, and canvas.
   
2. Pressure Sensitive - sold with a paper backing used to protect the adhesive, adhesive backed hook and loop is used commonly to adhere items to vinyl or glass substrates.
   

Sew-On Hook and Loop Fasteners

Sew-on hook and loop touch fasteners are widely used in numerous applications; ranging from outdoor products to orthopedic bracing. Sew-on hook and loop is available in a few different styles: molded, mushroom, and python hook; including napped and unnapped loop. Pressure Sensitive Hook and Loop Fasteners

Pressure sensitive hook and loop, also known as ‘sticky-back’ or ‘adhesive-backed’, is used in applications where sewing is not possible - usually on wood, vinyl, glass, or plastic substrates. Pressure sensitive hook and loop is available in two adhesive styles; rubber or acrylic based. DirecTex stocks rubber-based adhesive backed hook and loop in black and white color and widths of 5/8-inch, 3/4-inch, 1-inch, 1.5-inch, and 2-inch.
